Have your say on the development of Barnet’s new Placemaking Framework and how we can work together to help make places that reflect the spirit of our communities.

We wish to involve residents in helping develop our new Placemaking Framework. Placemaking is the process of creating good quality places. It is not simply a case of building new infrastructure, but rather creating spaces that people want to be in – whether that’s to visit, to work, to live, to play or simply to enjoy. Each place should have a distinct identity that reflects the needs, spirit, and character of the community it serves.

Our Placemaking Framework seeks to set out how we can work together as a council with our residents to create better places. We want to hear more about how you interact with your local area (specifically your local town centres) and what we can do to improve them so they can better serve the needs of their communities.

What we are proposing

In June 2022 the council committed to a new strategy for our Town Centres. This commitment had sustainability at its heart, with the goal of working in partnership with the Town Centre teams and engaging with businesses, residents, and local community groups. In December 2023, the new Placemaking team was set up to help make this vision a reality. We are now in the process of creating a Placemaking Framework to establish a set of principles and direction for placemaking across the borough that we want your help with.

Your views are important to us

Collaboration and engagement are at the heart of Placemaking. Continuous engagement with residents, local businesses and communities is key as you are the experts of your local areas. By involving you throughout the process – from defining our vision to achieving our long-term goals – we can ensure that the places we develop are functional, meaningful, and sustainable for the communities they serve.

Therefore, the aims of this engagement are to understand:

  • more about the places that are important to you and what you use them for. We want to know what the key things are you care about so we can make sure our objectives align with yours. Specifically, we want to know more about the town centres you visit in Barnet. While our placemaking work will go beyond just our town centres, these will be a focus as they are community hubs. We want to know more about what you use your town centres for and the ways in which we can improve them to encourage you to use them more.
  • how we can best work with you going forward. We don’t want to ask for your opinion once and then never again. We want to continually work with you to help shape your places. It is only by working together that we can create places which residents can feel proud of and serve their needs.

We are keen to have your input on our town centres and how we can work together to create a sense of place in Barnet. By doing so you can help shape the form and direction our Placemaking Framework takes.

How to have your say

  • You can have your say by completing our online questionnaire.
  • If you would like to request a paper questionnaire or another format, please:
  • If you would like someone to help you complete the questionnaire or need more information, please contact us using one of the above methods.

What happens after the consultation closes?

The council will use the findings from this engagement to help shape the objectives of our Placemaking Framework and inform how we engage and work with residents going forward. We will publish the results of this engagement on this web page in due course.
