Have your say and help influence a future approach to create a more active and healthier borough.

We are interested in hearing from residents on their thoughts and ideas in respect of a refresh of our existing Fit & Active Barnet Framework. The existing Framework sets out how, through a multi-agency and collaborative approach, we aim to achieve a more active and healthier borough through the themes of People, Place and Partnerships.

This engagement opportunity will provide residents with the chance to shape a future Fit & Active Barnet by sharing their own experiences and views of physical activity

Your views are important to us

We want to hear your views on a future approach to create a more active and healthier borough and are particularly interested in how this is achieved in consideration of your own experiences and/or views of physical activity within the borough.

Residents are invited to participate in a short group discussion (date and time tbc determined on interest received).

We want to hear from all residents, particularly individuals from the following demographic groups/communities, as insight informs us that physical activity levels are typically lower amongst these groups:

  • Women and Girls
  • Children and young people, particularly from areas of deprivation or low income families
  • Black and Minority Ethnic
  • Older People (55+)
  • Disabled people and/or those living with a long-term health condition.

Please note that parental/legal guardian consent will be required for anyone under 16 who wishes to participate.

To thank participants for their time and contributions, individuals that attend a discussion group will be offered a pass to enjoy an activity at one of the boroughs leisure facilities operated by Better.

How to have your say

  • Register to attend a group discussion:

To register your interest to attend a group discussion please email sport@barnet.gov.uk by no later than Wednesday 20th November 2024.

What happens after the consultation closes?

The council will use findings from the group discussion to inform the refresh of the Fit & Active Barnet Framework which we intend to launch as a live document from April 2025. We will publish the results of the consultation, our decision and how we are acting on the results of the consultation on this web page from April 2025.

    We asked

We asked residents for their views on the refresh of the Fit and Active Barnet (FAB) Strategy which aims to guide the achievement of a more active and healthier borough through increased participation in physical activity (including leisure and sport) opportunities. Through a collaborative approach we are committed to achieve ensure that all residents can live more active and healthier lifestyle.

We invited around 43 local residents to take part in engagement sessions, working with different partner organisations to hear their thoughts before finalising the strategy. We made sure to include people of different ages, religions, genders, income levels, abilities, and ethnic backgrounds. Our aim was to better understand the perception and approach that Barnet residents have regarding Physical Activity and in particular:

    1. What being physically active mean for them
    2. What are the barriers that stop them from being active?
    3. What can be done to reduce the obstacles?
    4. How do they get their information about sport and fitness opportunity
    5. The responses to the above questions were varied but the top four barriers to participation were:
    6. Lack of motivation
    7. Health
    8. Financial
    9. Not aware of where to find out about opportunities

    We did

Feedback and suggestions gathered have been incorporated into the development of the FAB Strategy which commits us to:

    1. Ensure that the FAB Hub continues to provide a ‘one stop’ resource for all things sport, physical activity, leisure and wellbeing for residents and health professionals.
    2. Continue to deliver a commitment to a Dementia Friendly Barnet and the Barnet Charter for Mental Health.
    3. To continue to build on the success of targeted FAB communication campaigns, encouraging more residents to Get Active and Give it a Go
    4. To promote existing physical activity interventions and explore opportunities for the creation of new free or low-cost interventions, particularly targeted amongst the borough’s lower participation groups/communities.
