Overview

In Barnet, like many other local authorities, we have a system of parking bays and parking permits that prioritise parking for local residents, businesses and their visitors and customers. These systems are called Controlled Parking Zones.

Following on from concerns raised in relation to commuter and erroneous parking, we undertook an informal parking engagement in Underhill and the surrounding area between 1 and 31 May 2023 on proposals to extend the Chipping Barnet D CPZ. We also carried out parking stress surveys in the area.

Of the 143 properties consulted in Mays Lane, 24 residents responded to the engagement which equates to only 17%. This is considered to be a low response rate to the engagement. 16 residents out of 24 residents from Mays Lane stated that they would not be in favour of the inclusion into the CPZ, with four in support and four stating that they’re unsure.

Mays Lane has a high volume of residents who have access to off-street parking, such as driveways. Half (12) of the respondents stated they had access to off-street parking. The introduction of a CPZ has less of an impact on those residents who have access to off-street parking.

Details of the informal consultation can be found via this link Underhill and surrounding area CPZ consultation.

What we are proposing

The outcome of the parking engagement and results of the parking stress surveys supported the concerns raised during the feasibility study. Therefore, to address the parking issues raised we are proposing to include Mays Lane within the Chipping Barnet D CPZ. The existing Chipping Barnet (D) CPZ operates from Monday to Friday between 2pm and 3pm.

Mays Lane is a busy bus route, in which road safety and unobstructive free flowing traffic is vital for the operation of its service. Including Mays Lane into the Chipping Barnet D CPZ would reduce non-residential parking, enhance road safety and ease congestion.

The implementation of double yellow lines on junctions and bends could also be included as part of the scheme to enhance road safety. The single yellow lines in Mays Lane will also need to be reviewed due to these initially being implemented to support the old football stadium (which is now Ark Pioneer Academy), now making them ineffective.
