Barnet Council strategic partners, Barnet Multi-Faith Forum and Middlesex University were nominated for the Mitzvah Day awards as one of five projects shortlisted for the Anglo-Jewish Association Award for Outstanding Interfaith Partnership. The event was held at the Jewish Museum in Camden and sponsored by the Jewish Chronicle.

The nomination came after Middlesex University Interfaith Network and Barnet Multi Faith Forum planted snowdrops at St Mary's Church, Hendon, to remember victims of the Holocaust. Members of the Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu and Greek Orthodox faiths - including Barnet Deputy Mayor Nagus Narenthira - took part. It was a particularly poignant day, as the church had previously received support from faith community neighbours when its churchyard suffered a series of devastating acts of vandalism and desecration.

Mitzvah Day CEO Stuart Diamond told all the winners, nominees and volunteers gathered: “You make Mitzvah Day what it is. You are the ordinary people who do such extraordinary work to help others. We are privileged to have you and to celebrate you. We want to salute you for everything you do.”

Esmond Rosen, President Barnet Multi Faith Forum, said:

"The bulb planting presented a positive and emotive occasion by recognising the coming together of many local faith communities to support the Church, along with Metropolitan Police and the Communities Security. The snowdrops will advance the sanctity of the environment and the legacy of remembrance."

Monna Rizvi, Co-Chair of Middlesex University Interfaith Network, said:

"Equality, diversity and inclusion are values that Middlesex University prioritises and celebrates from within its staff and student body as well as in the local community of Barnet. Our Inter Faith Network members are proud to have organised and participated with Barnet Multi Faith Forum and Barnet Council in this wonderful Mitzvah Day initiative and look forward to seeing the snowdrops flourish in their beautiful surroundings in St Mary’s churchyard.
